The idea is very simple. I appreciate a lot the work of McGovern. I personally think that he’s one of the most intelligent writer about the web. This week I’ve read his newsletter about the difference between paper and the web. While I was mumblin about what I was reading, an alarm rang in my mind. It was some time ago that Mr Umberto Eco, the famous Italian writer, narrated about tha web navigation and how simple was to lose the right route. So I took this decision: no online link, but all the links at the bottom of the page.

As the project will be developed using an open source framework, it would be natural to think of a LAMP (Linux Apache MySQL PHP) environment as a natural selection.
Ok for MySQL, at least in the first stage of development.
In the following steps a second DB environment should be set up (SQL Server, that is distributed also in an Express Edition, and Oracle). Every call to the databse should be univoque.
OK for Apache Web server. It runs both in Windows environment and Linux environment.
OK for PHP. Widely used and sufficientently mature to think of it as a possibile programming environment. As the version 4 of PHP will be no longer maintained after the end of 2007, the version to be used is 5. PHP has to be compared with Java as a general language, as these are the only environment available in different platforms and that are widely available. I prefer PHP because it allows a more natural way of programming if compared to Java.
Last but not least, the operating system to be used is Windows. It may look a strange choice, but Windows has very few dialects and products don’t need to be recompiled over and over to be installed on different machine using different Linux distribution.
